Adventure Time on the Appalachian Trail

Day 82 – trail magic at the roller coaster

The roller coaster is a 14-mile section in northern Virgina that looks like a roller coaster in the elevation profile. It’s a beast.

Lucky for us Punch Line set up some trail magic with a gal that had been following him and the group on Instagram. Kate Welling is her name and at first it seemed too good to be true. Could this random offer be trusted… She offered to slack pack us for part of the roller coaster. He checked around with some other people he knew ahead of us and sure enough it was legit! They had stayed at her place and vouched she was the real deal!

We ended up passing her and her dad while they were hiking for the day and it just happened too turn out she was available to bring cold drinks to us at the next road crossing when we showed up after lunch. Then we arranged to take advantage of slack packing and she offered to drive us to a restaurant near the trail and then to her home to sleep!

It just doesn’t get much better than that! So we happily crossed the 1,000 mile marker on the trail pack free!

Punchlines selfie stick!
